Jamindan town seals agreement on coconut nursery

The municipal government of Jamindan, Capiz in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) will establish a coconut nursery to provide seedling needs of the municipal government's coconut replanting program.

The partnership was sealed in a signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) during the culmination activity in the provincial observance of 21st Philippine Coconut Week celebration last August 24 at Coco Oil Mill site at Barangay Ondoy in Ivisan town.

The MOA signing was led by PCA Regional Manager Jose S. Cruz and Jamindan municipal mayor Ethel Jinon.

"I will encourage farmers to plant coconuts in vacant upland areas," said Mayor Jinon in her message during the culmination program.

Jamindan town has an estimated 800 hectares of coconut area both tenanted and owner operated managed by more than 1,500 coconut farmers based on Capiz Physical, Socio-Economic and Development (PSED) Profile 2005.

For his part, PCA -- Capiz Provincial Coconut Development Manager Jeffrey Delos Reyes said the coconut replanting program in upland areas is expected to mitigate flooding problem in low lying parts of the province during rainy season.

The coconut, classified as a high value crop, is the province third major product next to palay and sugarcane.

The culmination program was highlighted by the awarding of certificates of recognition to various advocates of the coconut industry in the province.
